What Is a Healthcare Agent? Understanding Their Role in Your Medical Decisions

What is a healthcare agent, and why is this role so crucial? A healthcare agent, also known as a healthcare proxy, is the person you trust to make medical decisions on your behalf if you’re unable to do so yourself. This individual will communicate your healthcare wishes to doctors and other medical professionals, ensuring that your preferences are honored. Your healthcare agent can only carry out the instructions you’ve outlined in your healthcare directive; they don’t have the authority to override your decisions. This role is often filled by a spouse, but if your spouse isn’t available, you’ll want to designate another trusted person. Your healthcare directive can include critical instructions like whether you want to be resuscitated, if you prefer burial or cremation, and how long you wish to remain on life support. A well-prepared directive helps avoid confusion and conflict, as in the case of Terri Schiavo, whose family endured a lengthy legal battle because her wishes were not clearly documented. Having a healthcare agent and a directive in place gives you peace of mind, knowing your medical decisions will be respected and reducing the burden on your loved ones.
